Q: Hi! Could you tell me a little about yourself?

A: Hello everyone, I am the creator and shop owner of Kaniboom Doll! I live in China, and I’m a full-time BJD artist. I first encountered BJDs when I was in high school, I bought a magazine that happened to have BJDs in it. After I saw those cute dolls, I couldn’t stop thinking about them, and I purchased my first BJD. When I completed my studies, I became interested in the idea of, “creating a doll that I personally love”, and from there I began my attempts at creating a BJD. Because I love animals, I started by experimenting with blending together the style of dolls that I like with animal features and created my first anthro doll head, Inari Fox-Kura. After that, I learned about 3D modeling through friends, and I began learning how to create dolls through that method. I stumbled in the process of figuring things out, but when I mastered the basics of 3D modeling enough to bring into being a new doll, I loved the feeling that this type of creative expression brought me. After that, more and more people liked my work, and I feel super happy being able to create dolls that people like!

Q: I like the name Kaniboom. Why did you choose it for your company?

A: The name, “Kaniboom”, was created with the help of a good friend. My online handle in Chinese is “蟹”, or crab/kani, and the “boom” part is from my hope that the number of people who like my works will increase. (˵¯͒¯͒˵)

Q: What sizes of dolls do you like most?

A: In terms of doll size, basically, I like all of them. I personally own small dolls, as well as 70cm and 75cm ones. I prefer cute things when I make them, so I make them in tiny-size. I do have plans to try making dolls in other sizes as well.

Q: Tell me about your new doll.

A: “The upcoming doll Blanca came into existence because I really wanted a small animal doll with a seam on the face. When I first had her concept, I didn’t have the ability to make it, so I temporarily put her idea on hold. Last year, before the Chinese New Year, I remembered Blanca again. It just so happens that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, so I decided to make Blanca in the image of a rabbit! (●• ̀ω•́ )✧”

Q: What inspires you?

A: To be able to bring something that I love into actuality is very fulfilling and interesting. I am someone who lacks self-confidence, but after I started making BJDs, I gained a lot of recognition and interest in my work, which gave me the motivation to keep going.
