~Quartz the Butterfly Dragon~

A unique and cleverly-assembled doll from Dream High Studio.

The 2019 addition to my Dream High Studio collection was one of the artist Donny Harijanto’s Butterfly Dragon dolls. He painted a variety of them in different color combinations, and each was given a different name: Quartz, Jade, Saphire, and Ruby. Mine is Quartz. He was sent to me, as always by Iris from Fabric Friends and DOLLS. The Butterfly Dragons were all limited editions. I asked Donny what inspired them and he wrote, “The idea of the butterfly dragon was originally from the look of a caterpillar mixed with a koala. It was very spontaneously designed. It’s supposed to be a companion pet of my elves and fairy dolls.”

My Quartz was chosen to be a new friend for my DHS Fairy Phairby.

So here is Quartz’s box:

The outer cover slides off. In addition to the doll, the box contained a postcard with Quartz, Saphire and Jade pictured (Ruby was released a little later), a signed certificate, and a paper with instructions on how to attach the wings. (the wing-bands go around the upper limbs like a backpack.)

Inside the box, Quartz was snuggled into a tube of foam. He was also wrapped in a cocoon of thin foam sheets. The wings were sitting on top.

So here’s my little guy! He’s 10cm tall. Quartz is beautifully painted by the artist and stands solidly as he balances on both legs and tail. His antennae are made of fiber that is threaded through holes in his scalp.

Quartz can open and close his mouth.

The construction of his head is really ingenious! The head from the top to the upper jaw is connected to the body by a magnet.

The magnet connects to a slider on top of a curved ball joint. When the head is pulled open, the slider slides down the slot.

The lower jaw and tongue are formed in a slit on the lower side of the ball.

As these photos show, Quartz is made of very many parts! He has raised tan spots and he is blushed with pale pink. His body has tiny crease lines like a pudgy wrinkly caterpillar. The body has a middle joint. His 2 sets of lower legs are attached to the lower joint. Each leg moves independently. His paws move but most of the leg movement comes from the torso sockets. There are no elbow/knee joints.

The tail-end is also poseable. The photos below are from his butt with tail up (left) and down. The tail ends with a little knob.

Quartz was designed as part of a series of fantasy dolls that are similarly scaled. I have two others from the series, House Elf Aldou and Fairy Godmother Phairby Flowers. As Aldou has his own pet dragon, I wanted to give a pet to Phairby too. Quartz and Phairby look perfect together. ^^

I took Quartz outside so he could show off his translucent wings and the first flower in our garden.

Quartz is a pudgy cater-dragon pet and he’s perfect for Phairby. Looks like they are already fast friends!
