~Demiurge~

Maeglin is the heart of DemiurgeDolls. With the assistance of her friends/support staff including her shop manager Julia, the company produces two types of dolls, realistic character sculpts and charming little creatures called Familliars. At this time, a new head named Hero has been released.

Q: I would like to know a little more about your company, Demiurge. Can you give me a little background on yourselves? How did you all get involved in doll-making?

A (Julia): We are a team of associates who are passionate, creative people. And we are friends of our sculptor Maeglin.

One is a professional artist who helps Maeglin in the workshop. One is a teacher, but we are all a team.
And for each of us it is not a hobby, it is much more than a hobby. We all love dolls, and together we do various projects and participate in exhibitions. We take no commercial projects, we do only what is interesting for us.

Most of all, Demiurge Dolls is Maeglin, sculptor, inspirer and head-liner of all art projects. Maeglin has no art education, but since childhood she has been passionate about different dolls. One day she saw on the Internet that people make dolls with their own hands. She didn’t know whether she could sculpt, but bought a pack of air dry clay and … so it all started. The first BJD doll was made in 2008, it was a man 55 cm. He still lives at the sculptor’s house together with other designer dolls

In 2010 Demiurge dolls opened. The first resin BJD project was launched in mid-2011. It was one of the first BJD-projects in Russia and was a great success. The first edition dolls we released in 2012, because we realized that our dolls were interesting to people.

Q: Can you tell me more about Maeglin?

A: In BJD-community Maeglin is known under this name. She makes dolls. She works on images. She gives the topics for the projects that we are doing together and then display at exhibitions. She is the heart and leader of the team. She=DEMIURGE dolls, because team members can change, but  Maeglin is there  always. There is a workshop in which we cast dolls, there is a Manager (me) who takes orders, and we do all that our customers need.

Q: Do you cast your own dolls or are they cast by a company?

A (Maeglin): My first doll was cast in the workshop of Dollshe, then my dolls were cast by a gorgeous Russian workshop, StarDolls.
Now, I work in the oldest workshop in Russia and cast dolls myself.

I love this job! When I get the parts out of the mold, I feel like the happiest person in the world!

Q: What bodies fit Demiurge doll heads?  What about resin color match? What resin colors do you offer?

A: I sculpt each head from the ground, so they are different in size and proportions.
The only body that fits all heads is the Demiurge. Early heads look well on bodies from Dollshe and Soom.
Know, that customers set their on Dollstown, Spirit Dolls and on Loongsoul.
It’s hard for me to tell which bodies fit the specific heads because I only have a Volks and a DoD at home.

Q: What are the inspirations behind your doll heads?

A: People, music, games, movies.
All my dolls are characters living in my head.
Sometimes I see traits of a character in the face of an actor or musician. Sometimes I picture a face in my head and look for similar features among fashion models or celebrities for a long time, but always I change the person according to how I imagine the character, take only certain features and change others.
This is a complicated process. Sometimes I destroy almost finished work just because it is not like what I have in mind. Sometimes I look for a certain part of the face for a very long time, different people, try options.
And just when everything “clicks” – there is a new face for Demiurge, which I’m totally happy with.

I will repeat, I do first of all my characters for myself.

Q: The Familliars are very different from the doll heads of Demiurge.  How did they come about?

A: They were born as a joke.
Once I aimlessly sculptured a funny chibi version of one of my favorite book characters. At that time, I didn’t even think that it could be launched into a series, and that many would like such a funny creature.

Then my friends talked me into making some castings.
The first edition was a success. People really wanted to settle at home funny cheeky creatures, familiars.
They are so different in different homes).
I like to think, that familiars are such funny guardian spirits finding their people to cheer them up and entertain.

Q: Can you tell me about your new doll Hero?

A: At the moment the Hero is my new job.
He is an ordinary man in an ordinary world, one among the crowd. That he is a Hero nobody knows, and nobody knows what he has done for the world, and would the world to live, if this Hero is not it?A question that has no answer. This is a philosophical subtext.

It’s always important for me to Express what’s in my heart, what I’m thinking. Whether the viewer will understand is not important for me. It’s important that I say that. Something like that.

Now the doll will be in two traditional colors-white and normal.
In the near future, he will be launched in the cast body, which can be purchased with the head. I don’t know what else to say about him. Just that he’s the starting character of a big project.

Q: Finally, why is your company called “Demiurge”?

A: Once my friends jokingly called me a Demiurge. And that name stuck.
But I think that demiurges –  all owners of my dolls
-they create their characters, their worlds and stories.
In General, when I think how many people embody their ideas through dolls made by me – I understand that I chose the right path.
I really need to do this – to create dolls for myself and others, to help people become demiurges.
