Big hats can be put on tiny dolls. Tiny hats can perch on the heads of big dolls. This sturdy cone hat can be made into a party hat, princess hat or clown hat.
Dolls used for the project include DollZone BB Ani,KazeKidz (Kaye Wiggs) LE Annabella and ImplDoll tan Model Doll Tdelia. Ani has handmade paperclay eyes by BJDcollectasy, Annabella is wearing glass two-tone eyes from Jpop Dolls, and Tdelia has acrylic eyes from Safrin Doll.
Materials:
Craft foam sheet with one adhesive side
Tacky glue or hot glue gun
Cloth
Items for decoration
Step 1. Half Circle patterns – make half circles in different sizes. They will be used for patterns for the hat. Decide which size you would like to use for your doll.
Step 2.Trace pattern onto paper side of foam sheet.
Step 3. Cut out the half-circle.
Step 4. Take off the paper covering the sticky side and press foam piece onto material sticky-side-down. Cut cloth around the foam leaving extra material all around.
At this time you can check to see how the diameter of the hat will look. Take the two ends and bend the hat to make them touch. If you think you would prefer to make the hat taller with a narrower opening, at this time a wedge can be cut out from the center to adjust the size.
Step 5.a. Cut slits along the curved side of the foam. Glue down the tabs. Do not glue down the tabs at either end of the straight side.
5.b. Cut off one of the tabs sticking out from the straight end.
5.c. Pinch the two sides together again with the ends meeting to find the center of the hat.
Step 6.a. On the side with the tab still sticking out on the straight side, carefully pull the material away from the sticky foam. Take the material from the other side and stick it to the foam instead. Try to get the two sides to meet and touch all the way from top to bottom. Make sure the ends at the bottom line up next to each other.
6.b. Take the remaining material and fold the tip downward. fold the cloth over as seen below. . Carefully glue the material down.
The basic hat is complete. This hat can simply sit on the head or ribbon ties can be added. Alternately, clear elastic line could be attached to hold the hat on the doll’s head.
Optional: The inside of the cone can be lined with felt. Use the same pattern that was used to make the hat and trim it slightly smaller as necessary. Test for fit, then glue down.
