Q: When and how did your interest in making miniatures begin?

A: It all started about 6 years ago when I first saw miniature dollhouse food on Deviantart. I couldn’t believe how something so detailed could be made out of clay.

Q: Where and how did you learn to make tiny food?

A: My first fascination with dollhouse food was followed by looking up tutorials to give it a try myself. A few days later I created my first lime pie and pizza. I still use some of the tricks I picked up back then but learning is a constant process, most of it comes from trial and error, experimenting with my own techniques and new materials.

Q: How long has Badger’s Bakery been open? Have you always taken commissions?

A: I actually opened my Etsy store very soon after I made my first miniatures, in 2011, just to see if anyone would be interested in buying them. It was just a hobby back then, but when I saw more and more people buy my stuff I had to either close the shop (tax reasons) or turn it into a business. I decided to give it a shot and went full time 2 years ago.

I have always been interested in commissions, some people find it limiting but I really like creating items according to specifications. It can be difficult to recreate real life textures, transparencies, and colors in clay, I treat it like a challenging puzzle.

Many of those commissioned items end up for regular sale in my store.

Q: What are some of your most popular items?

A: Bananas and berries are among my most popular miniatures. I also sell food jewelry and here pizza is the king, I think people like the customizable toppings.

Q: What are some of the strangest things you have made?

A: Oh there were plenty. A moldy piece of toast has to be the strangest thing but I have to say it was exceptionally fun and satisfying to make. I also made orange peels, purple raspberries, a siamese twin fetus and a potato collar charm for a cat named Potato.

Q: What scale of miniatures are available from you? What size(s) are the most popular?

A: Standard scales range from 1/12 to 1/3 but I can make most of the items smaller or larger if needed. I even got a commission for a 1:1 scale apple prop.

1/3 and 1/4 scale are quite popular, I think it’s because there aren’t too many people making food items that large.

Q: What are some of your favorite things to “bake”?

A: I think it’s pizza, I’ve made so many over the years that I’m pretty confident I won’t mess up and I really like decorating the slices with different ingredients.

Q: So what are you up to right now?

A: I have a 15% discount code on all items, it’s READY4SUMMERBJD, it can be used on any order in both my standalone storefront www.badgersbakery.com and my Etsy store and will be viable until the end of June.
