Bo Bergemann’s 1/3 Girls

1bergeman girls banner1

Since her official start in 2010, Bo has been creating an amazing variety of adorable girl BJDs in sizes up to 1/4 scale. Now for the first time, Bo has tried her hand in a larger 1/3 scale with the release of two dolls, a sweet young lady named Scarlett and a cheeky character named  Sassafrass.

Q: The last articles I wrote covering Bergemann BJDs was about your 1/4 and 1/6 Bella dolls. Since then you have released lots of different dolls in a wide variety of sizes.

A: I’ve made 11 different bodies now in a wide variety of shapes & sizes along with 51 heads. So a lot has happened since we last spoke!

Q: Why do you think it took so long to finally make a 1/3 girl?

A: I am in Hawaii, so far away from most of my collectors in the 48 states, Australia, Canada and Europe. I have a few collectors closer to me in California and even Asia, but most of my collectors are on the East Coast of the USA and throughout Europe. So for me, attending shows and conventions far away and shipping fulfillments far away lead to my dragging my feet about making such a large doll. I figure I can fit a lot fewer of these in my suitcase when attending shows and conventions. In fact I took 2 to Modern Doll Collectors Convention. But, many of my collectors have persisted in asking me to make a 1/3 sized doll, so I finally did so. I always listen to my collectors and try to please them whenever and wherever possible.

dsc09602My YOSD, Tiny BJD’s and Micro BJD’s sell out very quickly so I can always count on those to be good for my bottom line. But my MSD dolls sell a little slower. I think price in this economy, and size, just fitting more dolls into a person’s space for their collection, factor in. But when it comes to really being able to enjoy getting artistic with involved detailed costuming and face ups, the larger dolls can’t be beat! So I knew I’d get here eventually! I’m really having fun with my samples now that I am here.

Q: Can you tell me more about Scarlett and Sassafrass?

A: Scarlett was inspired by a model turned actress after I watched her in a movie.

I wanted to do that look. What appears to me to be a Russian Aristocracy kind of look for some reason if I just describe it off the cuff. She is a real beauty, dramatic, can be quite serious as well. I’m working on a Queen of Hearts with her now that is going to be ‘to die for!’ when she’s done! Sassafras is an elf with a twist. I literally thought, what would happen if I made her ears one up and the other down like some dogs do when they are listening to one side? From there her face just ended up smirking at me. Next thing you know I was talking to her, calling her Sassy. That’s how Sassafrass was born. I wasn’t sure how my collectors would take her, but early response is fabulous so far! I like to do two head sculpts at a time for an initial offering of a new body to make sure I make the most of that bodies potential.

So Scarlett and Sassafrass are about as opposite as I could get and both are appealing to different portions of my collector base. Some of my collectors want a real beauty. Others want more character and personality. Scarlet is the beauty, Sassafrass the personality. I’m looking forward to making more with both of them this Oct/Nov when I return from my last traveling time for this year. I’ve traveled a lot! I’m looking forward to settling down and fleshing these two out in different versions more fully than I’ve had time to do. I’d been so busy getting ready for MDCC .

Q: Can the dolls fit into standard 1/3 clothing?

sassafrass225A: They fit standard 1/3 SD clothing quite well! Their legs are a bit longer than most, waist a bit tinier and bust larger than my usual, but still not overwhelming. So if anything, a few of the SD outfits out there will need to be taken in a tad to fit snug. What eyes and wigs will they take? Size 14mm & 16mm eyes, size 8-9 wigs. Some 7-8 with stretch will fit Scarlett whose noggin is a bit smaller.

Q: When will Sassafrass and Scarlett be shipped?

A: I expect to fulfill next year. Likely somewhere between March & May. But I’ve learned my lesson on giving exact dates too early as the factory will make the final call once I send in the order. I will give more exact dates when the pre-order ends. The official pre-order will happen in Oct-Dec 10th.  I have a special pre-order deal coinciding with MDCC now up online.  The official pre-order will happen in Oct-Dec 10th, but the really amazing deal is to be had now for anyone willing to order early!

Q: What resin colors are offered?

A: At this time Sugar, Brown Sugar or Antique White. I like to give my collectors options!

Q: Are you working on other dolls at this time?

A: Always! I have many irons in the fire at all times so as to be ready for ‘what’s next’ and always wanting to have something new available at Bergemann Dolls. I have a Tiny BJD elf I debuted at MDCC I may do a pre-order on her before the end of this year or early next. I’m also working on more Micro BJD’s as Pip & Squeak were very popular last year being able to stand and pose and hold things so well as all my BJD’s do. That was a serious accomplishment and MUCH hard work to manage in a micro body for a doll just 10cm total!
