~ImplDoll Model & Star~ a Review

ImplDoll, a Chinese doll company which opened it’s doors to international sales in October 2009, expanded their 1/3 size doll line with the introduction of the Star line in November 2010. BJDcollectasy has three 1/3 dolls from the company, a 63 cm ImpStar Christoper cast in white, a Colourful Life Dorisy (with ImpStar body) cast in blue, and a new 56 cm tall ImpModel Tdelia in the new tan resin. In addition, a white resin Lauretta head has been matched up with the impStar body for a few projects on the site.

All three of the Impldoll ladies are cast in a smooth opaque resin and all are fully sanded. The resin has a sheen, but is not overtly shiny. The oldest of the three dolls, Christoper, came in a doll box, but the two newest dolls were packed inside doll carriers. The carriers include 2 external side pockets to store accessories. The dolls were carefully wrapped, and in the case of Dorisy, each fantasy part was wrapped separately and packed alongside the doll carrier.  In every case, the dolls arrived in perfect condition from China.

Impldoll head sculpts are unique, and their Star girl’s body  proportions are unusual with a small head and long waist and legs..  The build of the Star girls is reminiscent of  historical portrait art, like figures in an Anthony Van Dyke painting.  The result is a long elegant line which has proven excellent for creating characters such as the Snow Queen, Steampunk Lady, and Blue Angel featured on previous articles on BJDcollectasy.

The new Model dolls are quite a bit smaller in height, and have a curvier appearance. The feet and hands are a little smaller than on the Star dolls. The tan color resin used to cast Tdelia is warm and it is even all over the body.  The chest, waist, and hip measurements of the Model body are only slightly smaller than the Star girls even though there is a difference of  about 7-8 centimeters in their height.  Model dolls can also be optionally ordered with the Star body.  Tdelia’s head was swapped with Christoper’s to see how they would fit. The necks are a little different in size, causing the Tdelia head to perch at the top of the Star neck.    The Christoper head did not fit the Model body well.  The Lauretta head which is a little smaller, worked better.

There are some minor joint differences in the dolls. The original Star dolls had an upper thigh joint that is now available optionally, as some customers prefer a solid thigh. This joint not only revolves, but can be pulled out to allow for a wider range of posing. Christoper came with the original body design.  Dorisy does not have the thigh joint. The Model body does not include an upper thigh joint.  All of the dolls have double-jointed elbows, but none have double-jointed knees.  All of the dolls are well-strung without tension problems. Christoper,  Dorisy and Tdelia stood easily right after unpacking.  The Star girls are a bit spindly, but  did not easily fall even when posed on uneven ground.  Tdelia was able to stand especially well.  She could balance on a tilted rock slab or lumpy ground with her feet fairly close together.

Dorisy is cast is a warm light sky blue resin (the color tends to appear lighter in her photos). Her resin is even in coloration. She came assembled with human parts. Dorisy’s additional mermaid parts include mermaid arms and webbed hands, and mermaid calves and webbed feet. She also came with the staff shown in her photos, though it was listed as a limited-time item. None of the parts were ordered painted.

None of the dolls were ordered with face-up.  Impldolls come with a pair of glass eyes and Christoper and Tdelia also came with additional heel feet. The dolls can now be ordered in 5 different resin colors; white, real, pink, or for an extra fee tan or gray resin.  Dorisy is cast in a special color which is not otherwise available. The biggest drawback to the dolls is possibly the lack of double knee joint.  Whether this is important really depends on the collector.  While the lack of the joint limits the posing of the dolls somewhat, it is not a major flaw.  The biggest plus for Impldolls is the price.  The quality of the resin is excellent.  It is heavy and dense unlike some other less expensive dolls on the market.  For a collector who wants a quality doll on a limited budget, the dolls from Impldoll are definitely a great choice.
